People have been debating the'correct' way to hang a toilet rollsince 1891 when Seth Wheeler patented the essential item. According to Mr Wheeler, there is a correct way to hang it, with it even considered to be a more hygienic method.

But since it has been such a widely debated topic for decades, psychologists say there's much more to the way you hang a loo roll than just personal preference. It prompted a Reddit user to asked: "What is the correct way to put the toilet paper roll on the dispenser? I thought over top was obvious..." A statement on Reel reads: "Interestingly, his patent illustration showcased the roll as hanging over.

"There are a few possible explanations for why Wheeler may have preferred this orientation. One possibility is that he believed it was more hygienic.

  • 'My entitled sister-in-law stole our baby name but I got the best revenge'
  • Man who gave in to craving for Haribo sweets ends up spending six days in hospital

"When the toilet paper roll is hung over, it is less likely to touch the wall or cabinet, which can harbour germs.

"Additionally, it is easier to grab the loose end of the toilet paper when it is hanging over."

Whereas, another possibly suggests Mr Wheeler simply thought it looked better - and therefore decided it should hang 'over' as it looks "more elegant and sophisticated".

Commenting on the Reddit post, one user said:" I do under so I can hold and pull with the same hand."

Another user added: "Under is just weird, almost as bad as being left handed."

A third user said: "I don't see and have not heard any advantages to under. Usually happens in my household due to laziness when changing to a new toilet paper roll."

But Dr Gilda Carle claims the way you hang your toilet rolls reveals a 'secret' about your overall personality.

A statement adds: "According to her study, those who hang their paper "over" tend to be more dominant, while under users are more laid back.

"Carle's study found that people who hang their toilet paper over are more likely to be type-A personalities, meaning they are ambitious, organised, and driven. They may also be more assertive and take-charge individuals.

"On the other hand, people who hang their toilet paper 'under' are more likely to be type-B personalities, meaning they are more relaxed, easy-going, and flexible. They may also be more cooperative and team-oriented individuals."

In the comments, another Reddit user said: "Over the top is very bad if you have playful cats."

One more user added: "Over the top, always over the top. It seems most of my family and friends do the under.

"I don't want to touch the damn wall and fiddle with trying to get a piece of paper to get the bit of shit goo off my a**. I always look when I sit, if it's wrong, it is corrected before finishing.

"Oddly at my own house I forgo the the holder and just keep the roll on the tank. This of course has to do with the placement on the roll holder and me hitting my head on it one drunk night while vomiting and the beating the c*** out of the holder and never caring to replace it."
